One of the purposes of Knowing Hope, is to be able to reach the most vulnerable children living in Guangxi, China. Guangxi is a southernmost province, and also is one of the poorest. Recently, the story of “Gracie” has come to our attention. Gracie is 11 years old, and has been diagnosed with leukemia (AML-M3) after 20 days of fever. She is currently in Wuzhou Worker’s Hospital receiving chemotherapy.  This form of leukemia has a relatively good prognosis in the US, with 75% cure rate and 90% remission.  We are hopeful that Gracie will have similar odds in China.

Health care in Guangxi is difficult for many families. There is not health insurance nor is there free care given to those without insurance. It is a pay system, where families must pay for care. When faced with a devastating diagnosis like leukemia, families will use their savings, borrow from family and friends, and ultimately, they may not be able to continue or access treatment.

Gracie’s family lives in a rural village in the Tengxian area of Wuzhou. Her father, a farmer who was the breadwinner, suffered a brain injury and is no longer able to work. Her mother has gone to neighboring Guangdong to work. Paying for Gracie’s care has been enormously stressful. After paying for the initial care using family savings and borrowing money, Gracie was going to be discharged due to an inability to pay. No family should be faced with that situation.

Gracie and her family need hope. She deserves a chance to live. She wants to get better and go back to school. We are committed to giving Gracie’s family a grant to enable them to access continued chemotherapy in order to fight leukemia. At this time, our goal is to send $1000. to this family for her care. We need your help. Together we can make a difference. Thank you for giving her a chance.
